Training: CERT Train-the-Trainer

Target Audience:

  • People who will serve as the course manager for the CERT Basic Training course.
  • People with the desire to provide the best possible training for local CERT volunteers in their communities.
  • People who will be CERT Basic Training course instructors in any capacity

Note: Individuals who conduct only one or two of the units may do so without taking the CERT Train-the-Trainer course. However, the course would give the a necessary overview of the course as well as improve their instructional skills.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the instructor's responsibilities in delivering the CERT Basic Training course.
  • Know how to properly prepare for training each unit.
  • Be enabled to excel in the presentation of didactic material and demonstration of practical skills.
  • Understand adult learning styles and manage a classroom.
  • Have the tools for the selection of subject matter experts to assist teaching of modules.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching techniques by teaching back to the class and receive peer feedback.

Prerequisites:

  • A referral from a CERT sponsoring agency
  • Participants must have successfully completed a CERT Basic Training course (Note: The FEMA independent study course IS-317 Introduction to CERT is NOT an acceptable substitute)
  • Recommend completing IS-317 Introduction to CERT and IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System prior to the class.
